Racism as much about impact as intention Letters, Sydney Morning Herald, 13 Jun 2014 Mark Sawyer suggests that you are only really racist if you subscribe to doctrines of racial superiority (Tag racists by their actions, not words uttered in moments of stupidity, SMH, June 12). However, you neednt be a member of the Ku Klux Klan in order to say or do something that has racist implications. Racial prejudice and discrimination neednt involve doctrinal commitment. One of the obstacles to having an open conversation about matters of race is the tendency to downplay things as not truly racist. This can give succour to prejudice. We can do or say something that warrants criticism, even if it is not motivated by malice or hatred. This is because racism is as much about impact as it is about intention. We shouldnt forget about those who are on the receiving end of discrimination. Tim Soutphommasane Race Discrimination Commissioner, Sydney.
