Radiation is ugly. Even proton. Nicholas face is burnt, lips are cracked and swollen, nose constantly bleeds, mouth is completely ulcerated with mucositis. He can no longer use a toothbrush. His obturator is too tall to get in and out of his mouth without tearing the corner, causing further bleeding and horrible pain. And, the obturator no longer fits; he chokes when drinking, cant eat solid food. But thank God for Jello (actually Hunts brand - it slides better) he can swallow that! Tomorrow Nick will have a blood transfusion after proton and they will discuss his need for further hydration. He is neutropenic, so there is hope that the mucositis will abate when his immune system is competent again. No one has mentioned feeding tube, yet...but he is down 7 lbs in two weeks. Nicholas has 12 more doses...pray for strength to endure!
