Radio New Zealand International Call for PNG prime minister to ensure justice for SABL landowners Posted at 03:33 on 23 September, 2013 UTC rnzi/pages/news.php?op=read&id=79312 Two leading Papua New Guinea NGOs have urged the prime minister to cancel all leases under the Special Agricultural Business Leases system. In parliament last week Peter O’Neill tabled reports by a Commission of Inquiry into the system which said the leases were marred by corruption and mismanagement. The reports found the vast majority of the leases failed to secure consent of landowners. Act Now and Bismarck Ramu Group say over five million hectares of PNG land have been taken up by foreign parties mainly for logging, rather than agricultural projects. BRG’s Rosa Koian says Peter O’Neill told the nation ninety percent of the leases were fraudulent but she says he has signalled no action to cancel them or stop the logging. Ms Koian says Mr O’Neill claims his government is tough on corruption, yet he allows a system which cons landowners and enables companies to chop down their forests and steal the profits.
