Rae shrieked and jumped upright. She swirled around to face him. As she did, the low heel of her shoe caught the edge of the sidewalk and stole her balance. Almost as fast as she had stood up, she fell face first into the dirt. Before she could even think of getting up, Bubba was right beside her. His first instinct was to simply pick her up and set her to rights. Just as he reached out to do exactly that, he thought better of it. She was already shaky and he was a stranger. In two steps he was in front of her and she was raising her head off of the dusty ground. He reached down and offered her his hand. She took it without looking up at him. In one pull he had her on her feet. The first thing she noticed was how rough his hand was. Rough and calloused like her father’s had always been. Something about the rough skin calmed her. Something about that working man’s hand told her she was in the hands of a man she could trust. Finally she looked up into his face. from THE RUSE emmie graham
