Raf Simons is named Creative Director at CHRISTIAN DIOR Couture A year after the departure of John Galliano, following most intense rumouring, Raf Simons takes over as Creative Director at CHRISTIAN DIOR Couture. Previously at the creative helm of minimalist house of JIL SANDER, Raf Simons will make his debut at DIOR in July with the Haute Couture Collection. Raf Simons will be in charge with women’s collections – Haute Couture, Ready To Wear and Accessories. Bernard Arnault’s (owner of Christian Dior) choice clearly indicates a new creative direction at Dior, towards understated luxury. Many analysts expect a similar change at Louis Vuitton, probably next year, when its new CEO takes over. Marc Jacobs could be replaced by a minimalist designer such as Phoebe Philo, currently at Celine, also part of Arnault’s empire, the LVMH Group. 44 year old Belgian designer Raf Simons has been the Creative Director of JIL SANDER since 2005, being credited for the revival of the German brand, which during Simons’ tenure changed ownership – Prada Group sold the house to an Asian investment fund. He studied Industrial design, but after a few years of self-study, he became a menswear designer in 1995. Initially, he worked with Walter Van Beirendonck in Paris, where he was exposed to the work of Martin Margiela and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
