Rafael Nadal cruised to a record-extending ninth French Open - TopicsExpress

Rafael Nadal cruised to a record-extending ninth French Open finals when he crushed Wimbledon champion Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals to set up a finals matchup everyone expected and hoped for against Novak Djokovic tomorrow, Sunday. Djokovic fulfilled his part of the bargain by eliminating Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to secure a shot at the only Grand Slam title he has never won. The finals matchup between Rafa and Nole has more than the title at Roland Garros at stake. Whoever wins tomorrows finals will secure the world No. 1 ranking now held by Nadal, albeit by a precarious margin of 650 points over Djokovic. Rafa will also put a 65-1 record in Paris on the line along with a shot at a record fifth straight French Open title that would make him the only man in history to win a Grand Slam event for the ninth time. And on top of that, he will tie Pete Sampras, if he wins, for second place all time in most number of Grand Slam titles with 14, just three behind Roger Federers 17, and extend his record of winning at least one Grand Slam title for nine consecutive years. For Nadal faithful that includes us, we certainly hope Rafa will achieve all these tomorrow against a guy who seems to be only one who can consistently give him trouble on any surface, his favorite red clay at Roland Garros included. Go for it, Rafa! You can do it by playing your best like you did against Murray! Vamos!
