Rahimullah Yusufzai, Resident editor of The News says that Faulana Fazlur Rahman and co are the biggest losers in KP by-polls PESHAWAR: In the by-elections held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) retained two National Assembly seats that it had won in the May 11 general elections, was close to winning a third one by snatching it from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and losing the fourth to the Awami National Party (ANP). The JUI-F was a big loser as it failed to retain NA-27 Lakki Marwat and was unable to snatch NA-13 Swabi from PTI despite enjoying the support of major parties like ANP, PML-N and PPP. It could have lost NA-25 Dera Ismail Khan-cum-Tank to PTI’s Dawar Khan Kundi if the by-elections on this seat won by Maulana Fazlur Rahman on May 11 hadn’t been postponed due to security concerns. With three wins and a loss, the PTI managed to retain its tally of National Assembly seats in the province. It retained the NA-5 Nowshera and NA-13 Swabi seats won respectively on May 11 by Pervez Khattak, now the chief minister, and Asad Qaiser, presently the speaker of the provincial assembly, while losing NA-1 Peshawar. The chief minister’s son-in-law Dr Imran Khattak had built up an unassailable lead against ANP’s Daud Khan Khattak in NA-5 Nowshera while Speaker Asad Qaiser’s brother Aqibullah Khan won by a significant margin in the contest with JUI-F’s Maulana Ataul Haq Dervesh in NA-13 Swabi. However, the party was on course to an unlikely victory in NA-27 Lakki Marwat against the JUI-F in one of the latter’s strongholds in southern KP. PTI’s Colonel (R) Amirullah Marwat was leading by a significant margin against JUI-F’s Maulana Attaur Rahman on a seat that was decisively won on May 11 by his elder brother Maulana Fazl Rahman..
