Raider Varsity Volleyball in the Elite Eight!!!! NOVEMBER 2, 2014 BY RANDY DAVIES For the first time in well over a decade, the St Rita Varsity Girls’ Volleyball Team has earned a spot in the Elite Eight of the 64-team CYO Volleyball Playoffs. The girls had an absolutely outstanding weekend, playing truly inspired volleyball. After losing to Assumption BVM for the league championship, the team has really regrouped and appears to be peaking at just the right time. On Saturday, the Raiders, who were not ranked in the top 16, defeated Beatitudes of La Mirada in two games. That victory earned them the right to face their first ranked opponent in Our Lady of Guadalupe of Hermosa Beach on Sunday. The Dolphins tied for second in the powerful Southbay Conference. St Rita played with fire in dispatching the opponent in two games once again. Two hours after completing their second round game, the girls had to face heavily favored and fourth ranked Corpus Christi School of Pacific Palisades. The Raiders took an early lead, but hit a rough patch in the latter stages and lost the first game. Rather than folding, they came out even stronger. Again they took the early lead but widened it this time to grab game two. The gym was full of tension as St Rita took a slim lead that they refused to give back. The Raiders shut down every Corpus Christi comeback attempt and claimed game 3 and the match. In the elite eight, St Rita will face another seeded team from the Southbay in St Lawrence Martyr of Redondo Beach. St Lawrence lost to Our Lady of Guadalupe in league, but tied them for second on overall record. Due to a power outage at another site, the playoff schedule has been altered. The girls now play on Saturday November 8 at St Mary’s Academy at 2 pm. If they defeat St Lawrence, they play again on Saturday at 5 pm in the semifinals. The team is composed of eighth graders Amber Allen, Sophie Johnson, Devon Nardoni, Natalie Khraich, Chea Arroyo, Elysee Vielma, Katie Tupy and Leanne Kuhn. Emerson Gohrick, Hillary Howard and Collettte Allen are the seventh grade team members. Congratulations to Coaches Chris Gil and Ingrid Rose for their hard work in preparing the girls. Thanks also to “B” coach Andrea Bertollini for her assistance at practice and her work as score keeper. Go Raiders!
