Rail Trail Annual Meeting On Sunday, November 16th, Pedal Power - TopicsExpress

Rail Trail Annual Meeting On Sunday, November 16th, Pedal Power Bike & Ski again hosted the annual meeting of the Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. At this meeting we celebrated the 5th anniversary (birthday?) of the opening of the first section of trail. Chairman Tom Michelman (the really tall fellow at the screen) gave updates on the plans for expansion. In mid-September the next 4.9 mile phase went out for bids, and those are due by January 13, 2015. Construction should begin around March 15, and conclude in late summer or fall of 2016. Yes folks, this project is really happening. It will include refurbishing 6 railroad bridges, and construction of a new multi-use overpass spanning Rt 2A. At that point the trail will be around 11 miles long. We had quite a crowd at the meeting/celebration (there was yummy cake!) including Mrs. Bruce Freeman, widow of the state legislator who first proposed the idea 25 years ago. (Things really do race forward here in Massachusetts, don’t they?) Also in attendance was State Senator Jamie Eldridge (the other really tall fellow in the pictures) who was a great help in securing state funding, along with members of the board and other supporters. At the end of this phase the trail will extend to just short of the Concord Rotary. There’s still plenty of work to do to complete the trail all the way to Framingham. If you’d like to see this happen, you can join the Friends at BruceFreemanRailTrail.org . Your support can be extremely important in moving this project forward.
