Rail is really quite safe when properly engineered. There are certain groups with financial interests who make the conductors work longer hours, make cutbacks to safety in the name of budgeting, and make a scape-goat out of the entire CN workforce by turning a blind eye in order to ALLOW the workers to make their own days just a little bit easier for them selves. The the onus of a disaster is then placed on railroading as a whole, so that the said financial interests can appeal to the government for subsidization; whilst these same CEOs and powerful decision makers are never anywhere near the disaster zone, never confronted with danger as they sit comfortably behind a desk or in a lavish home.
