Rail strikes hit rush hours and late-night trains from this Monday until Christmas RAIL board RENFE has planned 11 days of partial strikes and three full-day shut-downs over the next few weeks in protest over redundancy threats. The company is set to be privatised and split into four different firms, and railway corporation ADIF will be divided into two. Adjustments will be made to the payroll and it is feared many could lose their jobs. Demonstrations and a protest march will be staged on November 23 between Chamartín station and the ministry of public works building. Minimum services will be provided from October 28-31 inclusive, with between 50 and 75 per cent of trains running, with the majority of those still in operation being long-distance connections and local and regional rail during the rush hour. This means between 18-20 per cent of staff will be on duty those days. Monday this coming week will be the worst-hit with between a half and a quarter of trains suspended between 07.00hrs and 09.00hrs, and between 15.00hrs and 17.00hrs, peak times for commuters, and later between 23.00hrs and 01.00hrs on Tuesday morning, when rush-hour traffic will also be affected by a strike between 07.30hrs and 09.30hrs and between 18.00hrs and 20.00hrs. Except for Friday, November 1 – a bank holiday for All Hallows Day across Spain – strikes will affect rush-hour and late-night trains on every Friday and Monday in November. This means travel will be heavily restricted between 07.00hrs and 09.00hrs, between 15.00hrs and 17.00hrs, and from 23.00hrs to 01.00hrs the next morning. And full 24-hour strikes will be staged on Thursday, December 5 and Friday, December 20. Anyone planning on travelling over November or December by train should check times carefully in advance and if necessary, contact the rail company or speak to staff at their nearest station.
