~*~ Rainbows ~*~ written with love by Denna Brookerd Parks Tiny beads of perspiration formed on her upper lip, a characteristic I grew accustomed to. Her light cotton dress barely moving in the August swelter. As she stoops to pick up something glistening in the grass, you can tell that shes barefoot, and both of her arm pits are damp. She stands just as a 1966 Chevy Impala rides by, kicking up the dusty road around its tires. She waves and smiles back at the driver. Two skinny, squealing girls don her attention. They have on sunsuits and are taking turns wielding a green water hose, both for pleasure and summers relief. It is my very own Mother, baby sister and I caught up in a vignette. A whispering, fleeting moment in time. So bitter sweet, its almost painful to recall. For I know what all is to follow. Along with the many smiles to come, there will tears, there will be rivers. For now, the raven haired woman flashes us a smile, and I point the snake like creature toward her in mock, my tired thumb at the ready to spray her. You better not Denna Raye! Giggling and wisely choosing not to , I instead point the hose heavenward and let it rip. Donna exclaims, Look, a rainbow !, as her moonpie eyes light up. Its pretty, do it again, do it again!, she implores jumping up and down. I oblige, thinking how easily girls two years younger than I are so easily entertained. Mother looks appreciatively at our shenanigans, then takes a handkerchief from her dress pocket and dabs at her mouth. She unclasps her other hand and looks at the treasure she found lying in the grass. That day was bright and sunny. The rivers were coming, but so were the rainbows.
