Rains expected due to LPA, southwest monsoon MANILA, Aug. 1 (PNA) -- The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is keeping watch of a low pressure area (LPA) off Aurora province that will bring rains over Luzon. Weather forecaster Chris Perez said that the LPA has slim chance to develop into a tropical cyclone. In case the weather disturbance intensifies into a tropical depression, Perez said it will be named “Kiko” – the first cyclone to affect the country this month and the 11th for this year. He also said it expects at least three or four cyclones to hit the country this peak month of August. As of 4:00 a.m. Thursday, the LPA was spotted at 245 km east of Casiguran, Aurora (16.7°N, 124.8°E), with the southwest monsoon affecting the western section of Luzon. He added that Central Luzon and the provinces of Quezon, Pangasinan, La Union, Cagayan, Isabela and Batanes group of islands will experience cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. He said residents in these areas are advised to take all the necessary precautionary measures. Perez said the rest of Luzon including Metro Manila, Western Visayas and Caraga region will continue to experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms while the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers due to thunderstorms. Perez also advised fishermen, especially those using small boats, not to venture out into the western section of Luzon due to big waves generated by the southwest monsoon. Meanwhile, Perez said that aside from the LPA, the agency is also monitoring a cloud cluster over east of Mindanao which has started to weaken. In it advisory, PAGASA said that moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest to south will prevail over the entire archipelago and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. (PNA)
