At that point she didnt know that her parents and her brother had been attacked. She saw the man emerge from the farm house but the daughter already was weary: she had received a call from her mothers cellphone at 02h30 that morning but the phone had stopped ringing before she could respond. She decided to drive to the farm and saw the man come out just as she was at the backdoor of the homestead. That man then said something strange to her: they wouldnt open the safe, now why is that. When he tried to grab her cellphone as he ran away, she saw the knife and his bloodied clothes for the first time and feared the worst. She climbed through a window to get inside and found her mother and brother. It looked as if both were dead. Then she realized who the man had been. She said she became terrified and fled from the homestead and drove to the Barkly East police station. She then went to to the homestead with the police officers and her husband. The suspect was gone. Her fathers body was found in the pantry where the gun-safe is located. His throat was cut. Then she saw her brother crawl some three paces and realized he was still alive. She, together with her husband Dr Johan Olivier, and Dr Mbulelo Moshane applied emergency treatment at the Barkly East Hospital to stabilize her brother and ready him for transport. Dawie then was rushed by ambulance to Aliwal-North and taken by Aerocare air-ambulance to the Bloemfontein Mediclinic.The hospitals spokeswoman Amanda Appelgryn said that Dawie had arrived in critical condition and was operated on for the following injuries: his throat was cut in half. His eyelids were cut off and he also has multiple stab-wounds in his face, the stomach and the hiatus. Dawie was a retired engineer who had suffered a brain-injury and went to the farm to help his father. The family had stopped all farming activities last year and started renting out the land to surrounding farmers. An Agri-SA representative said the areas farmers are all angry and shocked: they all wanted to jump in to start searching for the suspect. We had to talk nicely to calm them down. The crime scene is very ugly and the whole place is covered in blood. In fact the 22-year-old man was arrested after tip-offs from local farmers who said he had just arrived in town looking for a job.
