Rajiv Awas Yojana To Be Launched Soon With an aim to provide affordable housing for the urban poor, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation will soon be launching the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY). Dr Girija Vyas, Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, announced that the scheme would extend support under JNNURM to states that are willing to assign property rights to people living in slum areas. Dr Vyas announced that the government will follow a two-pronged approach: 1. Bringing all existing slums within the formal system and enabling them to avail the basic amenities that is available for the rest of the city. 2. Redressing the failures of the formal system that lie behind the creation of slums by planning for affordable housing stock for the urban poor and initiating crucial policy changes that are required. This is one of the major attempts by any government to strive for inclusive and equitable cities with every citizen having access to basic social and civic services.
