Rajshahi University seminar urges new forest law Speakers at a discussion at Rajshahi University yesterday urged the government to enact a new law to save the country’s forests from deforestation. A new law should be enacted keeping in mind the challenges of urbanisation and global warming, they said. The existing forest law was promulgated for India in 1927 and it is not applicable anymore to face the new challenges, they added. They were speaking at the event organised by the Institute of Environmental Science (IES) of the university on the campus. With the theme “Think. Eat. Save”, the IES organised the programme to mark the World Environment Day-2013. RU Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin, Agriculture Faculty Dean Aminul Haque, IES Director Prof Azizul Islam and Prof Shamsul Alam of geography and environment science department, among others, spoke on the occasion. Earlier, RU geography department and IES jointly brought out a silent procession on the campus marking the day.
