Rakahanga goes mobile Wed 19 Jun Telecom is busy upgrading mobile and internet services in the outer islands. A new mobile service was launched in Rakahanga on Friday, extending coverage across the island. Previously, a small base station gave coverage only around the Telecom office on Rakahanga. There is now a larger unit sitting atop a mast, equipped with an antenna – a new set-up that extends mobile coverage over the whole island and more than eight kilometres out to sea. Internet speed and quality have also been improved on the island, with internet capacity increasing by five times. Telecom staff will also be visiting Manihiki, Penrhyn and Pukapuka for similar projects, and will return to Rarotonga in late June. Telecom celebrated the launch of the new services with Rakahanga residents with a barbeque on the island.
