Raleigh Then: In 1795 Nathaniel “Crabtree” Jones ran a plantation in the North Raleigh area, adjacent to what is now known as Wake Forest road. It is said that this plantation neighbored the famed Issac Hunter’s Tavern, where it is believed that North Carolina State Legislatures met in 1792 and decided to build the state capitol on Joel Lane’s 100 acres. Raleigh Now: On Tuesday February 4, 2014 the 3,448 square foot Federal Style plantation home, known as the ‘Crabtree Jones House’ was raised from its foundation and moved to nearby Hillmer Drive by Mike Blake, a house mover from Greensboro, and Preservation North Carolina. Raleigh Next: The historic colonial building was moved to make way for a new apartment complex. Preservation North Carolina is hopping not only to solicit buyers for the building, but to interpret this 200 year old home and preserve it for the future.
