Rally in Amed demanded freedom for Öcalan for sake of peace ANF - AMED 02.09.2014 10:00:01 Thousands of people attended a rally in Amed yesterday on the occasion of International Peace Day, calling for the release of Kurdish Peoples Leader Abdullah Öcalan to ensure a lasting peace. The Peace Mothers in their white headscarves were at the front of the crowd carrying a banner on which were the words Free leadership, Free Kurdistan and Free Middle East The crowds performed folk dances and saluted the resistance in Sinjar and Rojava with slogans such as Long live the resistance in Sinjar. Many people carried a poster of Öcalan. After the rally commenced with everyone singing the Kurdish national anthem Ey raqip, the first speaker was DBP Diyarbakır (Amed) provincial co-chair Zübeyde Zümrüt. She said: Today we are celebrating World Peace Day in the shadow of war. We condemn once again the warmongers in the Middle East. As she continued her speech the crowd chanted: Kurdistan will be the grave of ISIS. Zümrüt said that due to ISIS gang attacks in Sinjar and Rojava it was not possible to talk about peace. Zümrüt added that a meaningful peace would come with the release of Öcalan, saying: Leader Apo is the architect of peace. Those who wish to end this war should ensure the freedom of Leader Apo. She also called on everyone to take ownership of those who were forced to flee from ISIS attacks on Sinjar and to assist them as much as they could. Hanife Akpolat made a short speech on behalf of the Peace Mothers. She said: They want to use the gangs to destroy the Kurdish freedom movement. Everyone knows that the US, Turkey and Israel are supporting ISIS. A lawyer from Sinjar, Xeyri Seydo, then spoke, saying they had come to their second home. We left our land and came here. I thank the YPG on behalf of the people for defending us. Everyone should know it was the YPG which defended us and ensured we could come to the North. The Kurdish people here did not just open their doors to us, they opened their hearts. ISIS wanted to slaughter us, but did not realise that they have united us and removed the borders. I hope that before long all the borders dividing the four parts of Kurdistan will disappear. Amed Metropolitan Municipal co-mayor Fırat Anlı called Kurdish politician Hatip Dicle, who was recently released from prison, to his side, saying: Soon we will bring Mr Öcalan to this square. We are leaving the dark days behind. Anlı also drew attention to Israeli attacks on Gaza, saying: Years ago Kurds fought there side by side with the Palestinians. We support their resistance. Anlı said that there were 3,000 people from Sinjar in Amed, adding: They have a place in our hearts. In the last 2 years 25,000 Yezidi people have come to North Kurdistan, but the Turkish state has not provided any assistance. HDP Amed MP Altan Tan drew attention to the importance of the national unity of the Kurdish people, saying: The whole region on fire. How are we going to get out of this quagmire? When will we stop killing each other? How will we establish a new world? Before establishing a new Middle East or a democratic Turkey, our first goal should be to establish Kurdish unity. If we can set up democracy amongst ourselves, we can play a leading role in founding a new Middle East. At the rally an appeal was made for people to participate in the solidarity campaign launched for the people of Sinjar. Following the speeches, the rally continued with music from the Dicle Fırat Music Group, then ended with the crowd shouting Long live President Apo.
