Rally in Paris to call for the release of all Saharawi political prisoners Paris (France), 2013-11-10 (SPS) --- A rally to demand the unconditional release of all Saharawi political prisoners detained in Moroccan prisons, was held Saturday in Paris at the initiative of the League of Saharawi Students in France (LJESF). Carrying Saharawi flags and photos of Saharawi prisoners, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the Moroccan government and claimed a self-determination referendum under the aegis of the United Nations. For the LDESF’s President, Aziza Bent Ahmeda, this rally also commemorated the third anniversary of the violent dismantling of Gdeim Izik camp on 9 November 2010. “This event is important in the history of Western Sahara. It is since the dismantling of the Gdeim Izik camp that our brothers were imprisoned and sentenced to heavy penalties. We are here to support them and raise the awareness of the French to our just cause,” she said. For her, France, which defends the values of the Republic and human rights, “turns a blind eye to human rights violations in Western Sahara, and to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.” The Moroccan occupation authorities also suppressed on Friday evening last week a peaceful demonstration in the occupied city of El Aaiun, organised by Coordination of Gdeim Izik for Peaceful Movement, to commemorate the aforementioned third anniversary of the dismantling of the camp of Gdeim Izik, according to the Ministry of the Occupied Territories and Communities Abroad. The Moroccan repressive forces intervened violently, after the demonstrators chanted slogans demading the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, a respect for human rights in Western Sahara and the release of Saharawi political prisoners, the source added. Since Friday morning Moroccan police and assistance forces had besieged most of the citys streets and neighbourhoods which experienced a heavy presence of security services. The camp of Gdeim Izik was established in 2010 by Saharawi citizens and lasted throughout the month of October and until November 8, near the occupied city of Al Ayoun. More than 20,000 people took part, to denounce the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and demand their right to self-determination.
