Rally of the Sun and Stars today 9/14/2013 OVER 30 cars are slated to contest the Motoring Club Barbados Inc. (MCBI) Rally of the Sun and Stars today. With three stage venues slated to be in operation – Diamond Corner, Lamberts and Sailor Gully – the competitors will move off from the official start at the Greenland Agricultural Station at 2 p.m. The first stage is Diamond Corner, which will also be the venue for stages four, seven and 10; while Lamberts to Pickerings is slated to host stages two, five, eight and 11; and Sailor Gully will host stages three, six, nine and 12. The front runners are expected to be Paul Bourne (Ford Focus), Roger Skeete (Subaru Impreza) and Neil Armstrong (Suzuki SX4) in the WRC class, with Roger Hill (Toyota Corolla) and Dean Serrao (Subaru Impreza) in close pursuit. The recent rains may make things more interesting as it can all be up to timing and if one gets a dry run or a wet run on one or more of the stages. At the last speed event, the rain came in the second official run and everyone had to revert to their first run as their fastest time. Though this is a rally format and the times will be cumulative, the rain could still play a huge factor in who will be at the top when the final stage is complete. Bourne was the one who held the advantage at the last event, which was a night event in some wet and windy conditions in the north of the island. While there will be a battle at the top, the two-wheel drive battle is expected to capture the spectators’ attention as well. Joshua Read, Ian Warren, Rhett Watson and Dane Skeete have all claimed fastest two-wheel drive honours during the year. Dane Skeete was the latest winner at the last event, while Rhett Watson showed what the BMW M3 had at the Canefield speed event. Eager to reclaim the top position he held after Rally Barbados is Ian Warren in the Suzuki Swift, while Joshua Read in his Toyota Starlet will be looking to claim glory of the fastest two-wheel drive for his own. The event will see the return of the Group N car, in the form of Mark Thompson and Andrew Mallalieu. (CG)
