Ramadan 2014 is just a couple days away! The summer heat and longer daylight hours means that your more likely to become dehydrated. Stay healthy and hydrated during your fasts by maintaining proper fluid retention. Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) has saved millions of lives (prior to the introduction of ORT, death from dehydration (mainly due to diarrhea) was the leading cause of infant mortality in developing nations. Between 1980 and 2006, the introduction of ORT is estimated to have decreased the number of deaths, worldwide, from 5 to 3 million per year. There are plenty of drinks out there branded to keep you hydrated, and chock full of electrolytes. Unfortunately, many of those drinks are also loaded with chemicals, excessive sugar/high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors. Make your own ORT drink at home, for pennies on the dollar. UNICEF, The World Health Organization, and countless NGOs have recommended guidelines as to how an ORT drink can be made at home (nearly identical recipes). The Mayo clinic suggests the following: 1/2 teaspoon of salt 6 level teaspoons of sugar 1 liter (34 US fl oz) water ...thats it! Happy (and healthy) Ramadan to you all!!
