Ramadan Mubarak. Today’s Juz’ is Al-Ahzab [33]:31 – Ya Sin [36]:27. The themes covered in these ayat include (1) admonition to the Prophet’s wives; (2) general marriage rules; (3) guidelines for socially engaging with the Prophet; (4) an indictment of unbelievers; (5) punishment of the wicked; and (6) the consequences of rejecting truth. The selected ayat for the day establish faith in the certainty of God’s promises. “Praise be to God, to whom belongs all that is in the heavens and earth, and praise be to Him in the life to come. He is the One who Decides, the All Aware. He knows all that goes into the earth and all that comes out of it; He knows all that comes down from the heavens and all that goes up to them. He is the merciful, the Forgiving. Still the disbelievers say, ‘The Last Hour will never come upon us.’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, [it will], by Him who knows the unseen! Not even the weight of a speck of dust in the heavens or earth escapes His knowledge, nor anything smaller or greater. It is all recorded in a clear Record so that He can reward those who believe and do good deeds: they will have forgiveness and generous provisions.’” (Sheba [34]:1-4) In spite of the clear evidence that this world will never become perfect through human effort, there are still some who belittle people of faith for their belief that God will one day judge the earth. Even with the uncertainty that permeates every angle of modern life, the concept of a day of judgment is beyond their imaginations. Understanding that their perspectives may be clouded by Satan’s strategies, our merciful God sends his messengers to give them opportunities to repent—he desires all to be saved. This desire is beautifully illustrated in the Bible. Listen: “Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’ For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering to us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:3-9) Prayer. In the name of God the merciful the compassionate, may I not be like the disbelievers who reject Your word, but may I live my life in such a way that on the Day of Judgment, I will be rewarded with Paradise. Until then, please fill me with Your love and grace. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
