Ramadan Mubarak. Today’s Juz’ is Al-Isra‘ [17]:1 – Al-Kahf [18]:110. The themes covered in these ayat include (1) an exposition on select commandments; (2) a description of future judgment; (3) the uniqueness of the Qur’an; (4) a story of dead cave dwellers who were resuscitated after centuries; (5) a parable on God’s unconventional intervention for the good of humans; and (6) an exposition on the “two horned one” (Dhu ’l-Qarnayn). The ayat I have chosen for today spectates on how the Almighty God chooses to reveal himself to fallible humans. “Say [Prophet], ‘If the whole ocean were ink for writing the words of my Lord, it would run dry before those words were exhausted’—even if We were to add another ocean to it. Say, ‘I am only a human being, like you, to who it has been revealed that your God is One. Anyone who fears to meet his Lord should do good deeds and give no one a share in the worship due to his Lord.” (Al-Kahf [18]:109-110) These ayat provide a snapshot of the unfathomable mind of God. Space or time cannot limit the One who has neither beginning nor end, and is the epitome of infinite knowledge. This omnipotent God desires communion with humans and has blessed them with the revelation of his unequivocal uniqueness. It is indeed an act of marvelous grace that One so powerful is magnified by the worship of fallible men and women. In our class-conscious age where a great divide exists between the privileged and oppressed, this violates all standards of social etiquette and boggles the mind of those conditioned by the illusion of status. Nonetheless, true believers accept God’s grace and have faith in the wisdom of His actions. The Bible also reflects on this conundrum. Listen: “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways are past finding out! ‘For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?’ ‘Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to him?’ For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:33-36) Prayer. In the name of God the merciful and compassionate, I stand in awe that You in Your unsurpassable glory have chosen to communicate with me, a mere speck in Your immeasurable creation. I give You all my worship and direct all my thoughts and deeds to Your glory. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
