Rambukkana, Gaziantep proposed as twin cities Rambukkana and Gaziantep in Turkey will be declared twin cities, Sabaragamuwa Province Council Chief Minister Mahipala Herath said. These two cities are considered rare tourist destinations at which a large number of tame Asian elephants can be seen. Addressing a meeting in Kegalle, he said the authorities in the two countries are now considering this proposal. Herath said Gaziantep urban authorities are willing to extend their support to carry out the development projects in Rambukkana. In addition to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the city also has a historical and archaeological importance. It is a popular tourist destination and 370,000 foreign tourists visited the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage last year. “This was 37 percent of the total number of foreign tourists who visited the country last year. Rambukkana city development is presently undertaken by the Urban Development Authority,” the Chief Minister said. Kegalle District Parliamentarian Kanaka Herath also participated in the meeting. archives.dailynews.lk/2013/05/13/news12.asp
