Ran into Jean Anderson Durbin at Sentry. She pointed out that - TopicsExpress

Ran into Jean Anderson Durbin at Sentry. She pointed out that they have their 50th reunion this year. Unbelievable. They were the first class to graduate from Sauk Prairie (we were the first to attend an entire year at the new school). I also ran into Dennis Breunig, Sheri Dederich Steuber, and Dennis Marx. On my second trip in, I ran into Phyllis Ballweg Breunig. All four of them were 65ers from Sauk. Besides, Denny M. and me laughing over the bean joke (which Sarah said he still talks about), I couldnt help but think we will be having our 50th next year. I remember when we were still in high school and there would be a picture of one of the schools 50th reunions at some restaurant. They were a bunch of little old men and women (probably more women) sitting around looking OLD! The caption always listed (usually) the two rows of people. Then they would list the deceased members of the class. The accompanying article would always mention that some had motored from Baraboo or, God Forbid, from Madison (probably a whole day trip). Then it would conclude with A good time was had by all! These reunions were usually held at noon. We have discussed that. None of us will probably be allowed to drive after dark (not to mention, some actually go to bed by 9). (I was shocked at a Plan Commission last year when one of people coming before the Commission asked me if Andy was going to their class reunion. He told me it was their 20th. I still think of them as grade schoolers (maybe high school)). I know we still have at least two of our high school teachers around. I run into one of the 6th grade teachers every once in awhile. I dont think there ever were teachers that showed up at those old 50 year reunions. (Heck, I sure didnt think they lived that long). I know our 4th grade class (PdS) was so large, they split us up. Most of the kids went to the church across from The North Grade School (now the Methodist church). I was lucky and got to go to Grand Avenue (where #1 son now teaches). We were put in with some of the 5th graders. The following year They split us up again. The so-called smarter fifth graders and smarter 6th graders. The scary thing was we had this 6 foot 6, chalk throwing teacher. And I got her both in 5th and 6th grade. Actually (even though she scared me) she probably was the best teacher I ever had. I told her that just before she died. (I hope that isnt what killed her). In 7th and 8th grade, we did the same with Mr. Enge. If I didnt behave that well for Mrs. Fenster, I sure had fun in Mr. Enges classes. (Which is hard to believe after a nun told me I was going to go to Hell when I was in first grade.) (She probably is still right.) Enough about turning old. If nothing else, this can serve as a history lesson. Someday we might talk about an old editor of the Sauk Prairie Star who always started his column Here it is, another week. No matter what happened (and we are talking late 60s , early 70s,) it was always the Democrats fault. I am sure he blamed the Democrats for Watergate. And, back to the original subject. I still think of Denny and Sarah when something reminds me of the bean joke. (I still remember the joke). Trust me. It was really stupid, which is why it is a mystery to me why both Dennis and I still think of it and smile. I wish everyone who has read this far, a lot of bean jokes in your life and friends as good as mine. May God Bless everyone who has touched my life and all those who will.
