Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve Took a drive out a road less - TopicsExpress

Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve Took a drive out a road less traveled today. From California SR 1 in the small town of Guadalupe (between Lompoc and Pismo Beach), I drove west about five miles to the coastal sand dunes. This preserve, which includes the estuary of the Santa Maria River, is a preserve for several species of birds, mule deer, endangered frogs and the like. Due to the nesting taking place, you are not permitted to walk into the dunes or kayak in the estuary. That will change in the fall when the weather comes. The summertime barricade ropes will come down and the public will be free to roam the dunes (still no kayaking though . . . bummer). The weather is considerably cooler than in Yosemite, where its in the 90s today. Here at the beach, its 65° and winds NW @ 14mph. Its nice to escape the heat and the Independence Day crowds of Yosemite. ;)
