Randall -- If youve seen my film Inequality for All you know that raising the minimum wage is one of the most important steps we can take to reduce income inequality in America -- and it’s one of the most tangible organizing opportunities we have locally and electorally. Thats why Im so excited that DFA members have started hundreds of YouPower petitions to raise the minimum wage in their communities, inspired by my film at 746 “Inequality for All” Watch Parties organized by DFA a few months ago. Thanks to your hard work and organizing, our movement is picking up momentum. A few weeks ago the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to raise their minimum wage to $15 an hour and the Massachusetts State House recently increased their minimum wage to the highest state level in the country. City by city, state by state, progressives are organizing and winning major campaigns to raise the minimum wage this year. Will Kentucky be next? Will you join DFA member Chris Code and call on Governor Steve Beshear to raise the minimum wage in Kentucky to $10.10 ? Sign the YouPower petition from DFA member Chris Code to raise the minimum wage in Kentucky. Many American families depend on one, two or even more minimum wage jobs to survive, but many still struggle to make ends meet. And most minimum wage workers aren’t teenagers these days. They’re major breadwinners who need a higher minimum wage in order to keep their families out of poverty. The gains from a higher minimum wage extend beyond those who receive it. More money in the pockets of low-wage workers means more sales, especially in the locales they live in, which in turn creates faster growth and more jobs. A major reason the current economic recovery is anemic is that so many Americans lack the purchasing power to get the economy moving again -- but we can change that. As Secretary of Labor in 1996, I pushed for a minimum wage increase and over the next four years the United States experienced an unprecedented period of job growth. Putting more money in the pockets of working Americans helps to grow the middle class and build an economy that works for everyone -- and not just the 1%. Help raise the minimum wage in Kentucky by supporting the YouPower petition created by DFA member Chris Code. Now is the time to seize the momentum and raise the minimum wage across the country. Will you help? Thank you for your work. Together we can win similar victories from coast to coast, Robert Reich Former Secretary of Labor Paid for by Democracy for America, democracyforamerica/?t=1&akid=4877.2648006.O8kk1a and not authorized by any candidate.
