Thanks to rulings like Citizens United, powerful special interests are able to spend hundreds of millions to influence elections. And they don’t need to disclose a dollar of their spending to the public. This is the state of our democracy right now: A few anonymous billionaires have the power to sway elections across the nation — without us ever learning their names. This has got to stop. I’m cosponsoring legislation to shine some light on this rising wave of “dark money.” My colleagues and I are hard at work building support for this effort in Congress — but we will only succeed if your voice is heard as well. Tell Congress: Billionaires and powerful corporations shouldn’t get to play by their own rules. Pass the DISCLOSE Act and end corrupt “dark money” spending on elections. Right now, a single wealthy donor can spend millions, tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions of dollars to fund attack ads anonymously in races across the country. The DISCLOSE Act would begin to restore accountability to our elections by requiring groups involved in electoral work to disclose the identities of their biggest donors. Ensuring that voters know who is funding the attack ads they are seeing on TV shouldn’t be controversial. On the contrary, it’s a common-sense proposal that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress should want to support. Unfortunately, common sense doesn’t always carry the day by itself.
