Random rant. Oooh check it... rantom. Patent pending as of right now. Oooh check it again, Rantent pending. No actually you can have that one. So Safeway... The Safeway on 13th Ave is like a block down from my place. Obviously thats the most convenient grocer for me. So why is it my weekly grocery excursion involves 40 minutes of driving roundtrip and the crushing feeling of guilt from supporting the corporate monster that is Wal-Mart? (As opposed to supporting the corporate monster that is Safeway... but for some reason I feel less guilty supporting them? I have no idea why that even is now that I think about it) Well okay at least now the healing can begin in regard to that guilt. But the additional investment of time and the burning of fossil fuels when theres a place thats a 2 minute walk away... like literally closer than the far reaches of a Wal-Mart parking lot. Why? Why do I make that decision? Because of lemons and ginger. I hate vegetables, but somewhere along the line I figured out that I should probably start consuming them somehow because there are no plastic boxes at gas station cash registers where you can put in your spare change to go toward researching a cure for scurvy. So, I juice. I get the essential vitamins and nutrients from carrots and beets and spinach and a bunch of other despicable weeds, but without the atrocious taste and texture. And how do I pull this off? Because of lemons and ginger. Those two miracle plants cover the taste of all the other gross stuff. At Wal-Mart, a lemon is 67 cents. At Safeway, a lemon is $1.49. At Wal-Mart, a lb of ginger is $1.87. At Safeway, a lb of ginger is $5.99. You read that right. Now, its no secret Safeway typically has higher prices than everywhere else (interestingly enough, ginger at Sobeys is $3.99 a pound... thats the company that owns Safeway, so I assume their ginger comes from the same source and off the same truck, so how it gets 2 dollars more expensive having to travel an extra 10 city blocks is odd), and Wal-Mart typically has a bit lower prices. But 3.2x higher. Yowza. I typically buy 3 lbs a week. Theres $12.36 savings. Thats before lemons or anything else comes into the equation. Is there a difference in quality? Yes. But when it comes to produce the edge actually goes to Wal-Mart. You know whats also bad... when you go down the snack food aisle at either store, youll notice the prices of chips and chocolate bars and soda pop are almost exactly the same. So, Safeway is more or less encouraging people to eat unhealthy food instead of healthy food because their grocery budget will go a lot further if they do. This is an especially evil practice for the Regina 13th Ave location because that district is the only one left in Saskatchewan that still consistently votes for NDP candidates, meaning most in the area are on some sort of government financial assistance. Now, Im not going to say that Safeway is killing poor people... that would be irresponsible to say Safeway is killing poor people. Anyway, this whole rant, while based on 100% factual information, was all in fun. :-) See, smiley guy. Honestly I really only meant the parts I was being serious about. /rantom
