Random thought: Isnt the real horror story that were vulnerable, and fragile? I mean, think of spiders - they terrify so many people, but are so easily squashed because they are so fragile. Fear can be squashed, but so can we because we are fragile. Its the basis of my fear of driving - being in an accident. Dying isnt even the worst that could happen. I could survive but be damaged beyond repair, which to be honest is the greatest worst case scenario in my mind. The horror flicks that rattle us the most are those that focus on emotional vulnerability, but the physical horrors simply redress the issue of vulnerability in the context of mortality, torture, suffering, etc. So, I think Im going to call bullshit on public speaking being the #1 phobia. It seems to me that society has framed the idea of fear entirely wrong for quite awhile now. Weirdly enough, Buddhisms big focus was suffering, which more and more seems like it translates to vulnerability.
