Random thoughts after Game 3... -First things first: What a game! Any time a World Series game comes down to the last batter, you have witnessed something special. No matter who you root for, that is what you should want out of sports. Drama like that is what makes sports the best kind of reality TV. -Now for TripGate. People want to blame Jim Joyce. People want to blame Will Middlebrooks. But the truth is that Saltalamacchia should NEVER have made that throw, and this is what ended up costing them. If he had just eaten the ball, there would have been a runner on third with two outs and Pete Kozma coming up. I feel 100% confident that the game would have gone into extra innings. For the second straight game a throw right out of Bangor East Side Little League decided a World Series game. -You want to peel the Blame Onion back a little further? John Farrell was completely out of his league last night (ba-dum pshh!). WHY IS RELIEF PITCHER BRANDON WORKMAN AT THE PLATE FOR HIS FIRST AT-BAT IN PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL IN THE TOP OF THE NINTH INNING OF A WORLD SERIES GAME?! Seriously, how do you not pinch-hit Mike Napoli (A dead-red fastball hitter) against Trevor Rosenthal (A kid who throws nothing but fastballs)?! That, to me, was a fireable offense. Have Napoli pinch-hit, and bring Koji in with a clean inning in bottom of the 9th. Done and done. Even if Nap strikes out and Koji gives up a walk-off homer, that would be an easier pill to swallow. -Its a shame that the amazing play Pedroia made is only going to be remembered for what happened afterward. With the infield pulled in, he made a full-length dive to his backhand to glove a ball that was BEHIND him, and got up in time to make a pin-point throw that looked like it would save the game. Instead, were all talking about one full-grown man maybe tripping another. Pedroias play would be an all-timer if Salty doesnt make the throw to third. -Jake Peavy didnt have the best start ever, but his escape job in the fourth inning was an amazing thing that will also most likely be forgotten. Bases loaded, no outs, and he goes strikeout, pop-out, pop-out. Houdini. -Yes, the strike zone was HORRIBLE all night long, but at least it was that way for both teams. -I love Salty. Thinking of going as him for Halloween. But David Ross needs to be the Red Sox starting catcher from here on out. Salty is more lost at the plate than Donn Fendler was on a mountain in Maine. Ross needs to be in the lineup. -The Red Sox are GOING to have to play small-ball at some point. Ellsbury is doing everything he can to get on base, but the only way Victorino can do anything behind him is if he gets hit with a pitch. But Wes, Victorino hit that grand slam you idiot!! No kidding! That was also three games ago, and he doesnt have a hit since. He needs to be getting a bunt sign when Ellsbury gets on ahead of him with less than two outs. -This is your daily reminder that Xander Bogaerts and Kolten Wong both played in the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. They are now both making a difference in the Major League Baseball World Series. Pretty cool stuff.
