Randomised thoughts on fear of being black: Learning should not - TopicsExpress

Randomised thoughts on fear of being black: Learning should not be a subtractive exercise. You dont teach by subtracting what learners already know. A quality education approach acknowledges previously acquired information and enhances it. I notice that a whole lot of schools where our children-yours and mine go, teach English to black kids which is perfect. But then they ask the same learners never to speak in their mother-tongue. Thereby destroying previously accumulated knowledge and rich culture that comes with language acquisition. What do black parents do? They support the schools in their quest to destroy indigenous languages in pursuit of English. Parents are the first ones to defend the school and egg it on. Despite the fact that white learners do English, Afrikaans, French, etc to enhance their linguistic potential. What is the net effect of this? Black population that hates all things black. Happy parents who marvel at their childrens inability to understand what ugogo is saying. Children who cry foul at the slaughter of a cow to appease the ancestors but munch away at a Steers/McDonalds burger. Black kids play second fiddle to white kids. Go to these schools that tolerate black kids and look at their achievements boards and see who rules the roost. In fact look at the achievement board of where you take your child to school and see who are the majority achievers. In the long run, black kids and their parents remain in the periphery. Low confidence or at best, English confidence, the type that speaks hollow words with an accent. And then I ask, what type of people do not recognise and appreciate who they are and what they have? It is here where Afrikaans people beat us, they love who they are-their culture and language. Bayalilwela usiko lwabo thina siyaludedela olwethu. Yinde lendlela esiyihambayo. At this rate all the indigenous languages will be a course at University under classical subjects- basically meaning extinct languages. And guess who will be teaching them? Us (blacks) in a hyphenated English accent. Lafa elihle kakhulu, vuka muntu omnyama!!!
