Ranju Rai clinched silver medal for Nepal in the Asian Open Sambo Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Friday. “i won silver medal in Asian sambo chapionship....uzbekistan,” Rai posted on Facebook after finishing second in the women"s U-60 kg sports event. Nepal Sambo Federation"s Secretary Uttam Shrestha confirmed the result on Saturday and informed Republica that Rai advanced into the final by defeating a player of the host country, Uzbekistan. “She knocked out a player of Uzbekistan in the semifinal to secure silver,” said Shrestha, adding, “We do not have any more details other than that right now.” According to Shrestha, Nepal Sambo Federation"s President Dhananjaya Shrestha informed them from Tashkent about Rai"s achievement. However, he couldn"t give any information about the final match. Rai also has a black belt in judo. Meanwhile, another Nepali player Gopal Pun Magar had a disappointing campaign as he was knocked out of the tournament on Saturday. “Gopal couldn"t win any medal,” said Shrestha. Magar had competed in the men"s 62 kg combat event. The two players will return to Kathmandu after the six-day tournament concludes on Tuesday. According to Shrestha, altogether 23 countries had participated in the tournament. Shrestha said that Nepal had secured one silver and one bronze during the last edition.
