Rankins Cricket Club 1st XI 55 for 10 and 84 for 8 beat Wakering CC 104 for 10 and 32 for 10 From the Southend Standard - The return match was played at North Shoebury in Mr P Benton Juniors meadow between Wakering CC and the Broom Hills CC on Tuesday 17th July. Play begun just before 12.00 when the visitors were sent to the leather hunting; the home team sending Messrs. E H Benton and J C Page to the wickets. The match in the first innings appeared certainly in favour of the home team, the visitors being 49 runs behind; but on the Wakering CC going in a second time, the peculiar slow lobs of A Hunt were too much for them; only one man Mr J E Mills being able to make any lengthened stand, all being out for the small score of 32; this leaving the visitors 82 runs to win. At the commencement of their second innings things looked much against them, but after R Pettitt went in and got well set a change was made and it appeared to be only a question of keeping up the other wicket to enable him to win the game, which he did by giving the winning hit only 5 minutes before the time named for drawing stumps, viz, seven oclock. Thus the visitors won by two wickets. Mr R Pettitt being carried into the tent in triumph. rankins.hitscricket/scorecard/fixtureID_372703/1st-XI-v-Wakering-CC-27-Jun-1883.aspx
