Rant Alert 😬 Thanks for tagging me in things you find irresponsible in the world of nutrition. I do like to have a rant ☺️ Heress one i did after getting tagged in a page suggesting people put their kids on low carb diets.... 😑😑😑 I had so much more to say...but its already an essay lol ----------------------- While i certainly agree with the sentiment of replacing overly nutrient devoid diets with lots of nutrient dense food, its totally irresponsible to use the term low carb to do this. Carbohydrates are essential for growing bodies and most importantly for brain function - junk food is not. Im really sick of people interchanging these terms and adding to the general confusion about what is healthy. Low or no carb implies advocating the idea that children should stop eating perfectly healthy foods like rice, pasta, wholemeal bread, oats, lentils, seeds, nuts, pulses, legumes, corn, all vegetables, all fruit, eggs, dairy and so on...all of these have carbohydrates, and are essential to growing bodies and for brain function, as are the various micronutrients and fibre in these foods. I am starting to see nutrient deficient, lethargic kids with brain fog, mood swings and headaches, thanks to this kind of irresponsible advice given to parents who then make the decision to remove carbohydrates from their kids diets. These are symptoms we bodybuilders know all to well as this is what happens when we diet for competition. It is an absolutely horrible state to be in, and Im grateful it only lasts a few weeks. Im horrified people would CHOOSE to do this to their kids thinking it is healthy! Balance is the key. Anything eaten to excess becomes a health issue, and overly restrictive and eliminative diets done for no medical reason become mental health issues with kids turning to binge eating and other EDs. When your kid comes to you at a friends party and asks what can i eat that isnt toxic or poisonous?...you will realise just how much mental dammage Orthorexic thinking can do, and if you dont, you probably have a problem yourself. This kind of thing sets kids up for a life time of disordered eating behaviours. Yes, make healthy choices from a wide variety of whole foods. If you havent got a diagnosed medical condition, dont eliminate foods. And for goodness sake let the poor kids eat something not optimally healthy occasionally, (it will not kill them, or be detrimental to their health) or they will eat EVERYTHING you have restricted once you arent around to restrict them anymore. Healthy involves mental health too. The idiocy of the low carb notion can be seen by the fact that i can eat a Maccas wrap or a poptart (34g carbs) as my only carb source for the day and still be low carb. Throwaway terms like low carb do nothing to educate people about making healthier choices. When you tell people carbs are bad, that is all they hear, and carbs are NOT bad. ----------- Brb, resuscitating my kid after 1 Tim Tam was consumed... this month....
