Rant. Today I ruminated on the drilling after watching the council meeting online. All I could think about was our wastewater and effluent. This is something we know damages the environment. It is well documented, we put caffeine, micro beads, parabens, hormones, and fertilizer into the estuary daily. Through our waste water system, we do not have the filtration capabilities, and it is put into the river. What blows me away, in the name of hypocrisy, is that when a company wants to come and drill a small hole to do some geotechnical studies to ensure safety of our estuary, we get all up in arms. Altering our own behaviour? Oh. Right. Not my fault. Dont blame me. You cant point to me driving on the estuary. Its different. The drill hole is on a man made dike. It takes a few days. A dike that tourists and locals alike drive on daily to reach a man made beach with motor boats driving through it for safety. Trains take steel pipes through the estuary daily and make huge noise pollution. That is all on top of the ground, the air that is filled with diesel and gas fumes from tourism industry. I am all for making the estuary a park that is not to be touched. A blue carbon sink that is our future. It is unfortunate that we blind ourselves to the change that is available to us today, and within our scope of decision making, and complain about tax raises to actually fix the problems that are known to harm. We make assumptions and put together things that do not go together in the name of environmentalism. We need to curb GHG. We need to do this on a global scale. We need to take responsibility for the decisions we make, the goo we put in the water, and how we effect our estuary. Yes. There is a plan for filtration of our water system eventually, when we have tax money to do so. But not for micro beads, caffeine, hormones, and other delicious molecules that as local residents, we add to our rivers each day. Take a moment and put some perspective on the hate for geotechnical science.
