Rant ahead: WHY DO ALMOST ALL DOLLS FOR CHILDREN HAVE LONG STRAIGHT HAIR? So we had a lovely afternoon at Coney Island today and went to the aquarium. We told Z she could buy one toy from the gift shop — she had her heart set on a toy dolphin skeleton thing they didnt have but then she spotted some plush mermaids. Except the aquarium gift shop ONLY had white mermaid dolls with very long straight hair. We asked at the desk and they said they were out of the black mermaids but I looked at the website for the company that made the plush mermaids and it doesnt look like they have any dark-skinned mermaids, at least none with curly hair. Why would a Brooklyn aquarium only sell straight-haired white dolls? We ended up letting her get the one she felt was most her (at least it had brown hair and brown eyes) but I felt very grumpy and now Im trying to find her doll a curly-haired brown-skinned pal and not having any luck.
