Rant and social commentary: I just learned that my building management plans to keep raising our rents until they are market value, and being downtown, the new market value means priced for an Amazon employee, since they are the ones moving downtown. This means my rent will go up fast and I wont be able to stay here long. The average annual salary of adjunct college faculty (70% of college faculty are in this category and I am one) is between $20- $25 annually. Most of us work more than one job. The average salary of an Amazon employee in Seattle is nearly $97,000 annually. Jeff Bezos is worth $32.6 billion. Over 9,000 people are known to be homeless in King County. Something is wrong. Have you noticed all the construction in South Lake Union? That is Amazonland. The companys new complex will span as much as 1.64 million sq. ft. (147,600 sq. m.) of space in 11 new buildings, covering six entire blocks in the booming South Lake Union neighborhood. They need someplace to live, but what about the rest of us? I keep hearing the term creative class to describe Amazonites. Okay, okay, some of my best friends (as they say) work for Amazon. What is the solution?
