Rant warning! If you dont want to hear me go off on health care, - TopicsExpress

Rant warning! If you dont want to hear me go off on health care, stop reading now... So, I took mom to the oral surgeon to have two abscessed teeth removed. She had a 9:15 appointment. Im thinking we go in, they take her teeth out, we go home. Oh, no. First they take us until a consultation room and for 30 minutes try to up sell my 77 year old mother on dental implants. Not just for the two teeth shes having removed but for two other teeth that were removed over a decade ago. Not only that, but they tried to talk her into letting them remove a cyst on her forehead that her primary care physician has already told her is harmless. We had to really get firm with them and tell them to back off all that extra stuff. They also tell her she really needs a graft where theyre going to pull the abscessed teeth. I know the graft is a good idea, but it will cost $3000. Mom has brought $1800 in cash in her sock. Literally in her sock. And thats all she has budgeted for the procedure. The up selling pitch has already left a sour taste in her mouth, so she tells them no, she just wants the abscessed teeth pulled. The money girl leaves and is gone over twenty minutes. She finally comes back and asks if mom will consider the graft if they come down on the price to $2000. Mom agrees and finally, they do the surgery. Afterward, as they schedule her follow up appointment, they tell us theyre not going to schedule it with her dentist, but with the doctor who does the facial cosmetic stuff so he consult on the cyst on her forehead and they refused to take no for an answer after we repeatedly told them we didnt want a consult with that guy! Guess what? Mom has no intention of returning for a follow up or ever use these dentists again. Excuse my language but WTF! Instead of going to the dentist to have her teeth pulled it felt like we were at a used car dealership. We had to fight against up selling and haggle for an affordable price. I bet this dentist talks lots of elderly people into procedures they dont really need because theyre too tired or too befuddled or too afraid to fight back. And if shes just said, yes to the graft right off the bat, Mom would have been out an extra grand. I was steamed and had to do yoga breathing to stay firm but not psycho. Grrr...
