Ranting time What happened to good god-damn super robot mechas. They seem few and far between nowadays. Whenever somebody actually gets the gumption to make one it ends up being a evangelion/gundam ripoff. Seriously, name one mecha anime other than gurren lagann that isnt a ripoff of eva or gundam. I always look back to Gaogaigar when I ask myself what a super robot anime is. It is pure GAR, and that is what mecha should be. This actually kind of goes along with another problem I have with the modern anime industry. Every shonen-action anime is just striving to be a new flavor of Dragon Ball Z (you cant deny it) where power is determined by how big of an energy laser you can fire, and how easily you can wave your arm and blow up a whole mountain. It was cool in Dragon Ball Z, but frankly it has gotten old. What happened to power being shown by simply hand vs handing your opponent and ripping them asunder with your sheer strength and determination. Every action shonen today seems to be devolving into gigantic arm wrestling matches, where two people boost their power levels to unspeakable hights, and the winner is the one who can flex their muscles the biggest. This isnt engaging. This isnt interesting. What happened to strategy, and cunning? What happened to overcoming despite your limitations? Gaogaigar literally got 1 upgrade throughout the entire run of the original anime and it happened at the end of the first arc (he had other add ons but they were mostly used in situation based events, and when he needed a new finishing move) Yet time and time again Guy and his mecha tore through enemy after enemy while facing unlikely odds. This is GAR. This is what I would love to see more of in anime today. Sadly though I have to wait for the next EVA ripoff and the next new flavor of Dragon Ball Z. Im just going to stick to old mecha anime, Gurren lagann, Fist of the North Star and Jojos bizarre adventure.
