Rape and murder slur on father-in-law Malda, Jan. 14: A 20-year-old housewife who was pregnant was allegedly burnt to death by her father-in-law after she resisted the man from raping her. The father of the victim has filed a complaint with the police against Nilkanto Sarkar, 53, the father-in-law, and Niroy Sarkar, 26, the husband. The woman who was five months pregnant, was allegedly tied up and set on fire by her father-in-law after he poured kerosene on her on Saturday morning. The woman was admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital where she died around 9pm yesterday. Both the accused are absconding. According to a police source, the woman was the youngest of three daughters of a daily labourer. She had three brothers and had studied till Class X. She married about Niroy who came from a farming family seven months ago, a police source said. According to the police, Nilkanto allegedly attempted to rape her on Saturday morning. Around 10am on Saturday, when the woman resisted the man, her father-in-law reportedly tied her hands and feet, wrapped her in a blanket and set her on fire after sprinkling kerosene on her in the kitchen of the house. Both the father-in-law and the husband have fled. The housewife was admitted to the hospital by neighbours who heard her screaming in pain. She died on Tuesday evening, a police source said. The father of the victim said his daughter had been complaining about the treatment meted out to her. My daughter had told me that her father-in-law used to make indecent proposals almost daily. On Saturday, while her husband was away working in their farm, the man attempted to rape her. When she tried to raise the alarm, he beat her up, tied her and set her on fire. I had lodged a complaint with the police on Saturday evening against my daughters father-in-law and husband for attempted murder after she was admitted to the hospital. I have filed a murder complaint with the police this morning but no one has been arrested yet, the father said. A police source said the victims mother-in-law (Aruna Sarkar) was not at home during the incident. We have come to know that she was not home on Saturday morning and had gone to visit a relative in the village. The complaint does not name her, but she has also fled, a police source said. Malda police superintendent Prasun Banerjee said the police was investigating the case. The father-in-law and husband of a 20-year-old housewife have been accused of burning the woman to death. The accused have fled the area and we are looking for them, Banerjee said. On Saturday, after the father filed the FIR, a case of attempt to murder was started under Section 307 of the IPC. We have got another complaint from him today and a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC has been started, Banerjee said. Jyotish Chandra Das, the deputy superintendent of Malda Medical College and Hospital, said: The woman was admitted with 90 percent burns. We had told her family members that she was critically injured and had slim chances of survival.
