Rare Fiordland Penguin Photos Less than 2,500 breeding pairs of the Fiordland penguin exist in the world and are under threat from introduced predators such as dogs, cats, stoats and rats. They are unique in that they breed and nest north of the subtropical convergence, in the temperate rainforests of New Zealand’s rugged Fiordland southwest coast and its outlying islands. Breeding under high rainforest canopy in caves, under overhangs, or in dense vegetation, they will sometimes travel hundreds of meters inland, climbing up hills or swimming up streams to gain access to their burrows. It took a year of planning, eight days of travel, three days in the forest and on its coastal fringe, 272 sandfly bites and a very tolerant and helpful partner (thanks Heather) to not only experience this unique species in its natural environment, but take these photos. I think however it was easily worth 10 times this effort.
