Rare are the times that an incredibly lagging, long-drawn, maybe even boring movie has kept me glued til the end. Besides, how much more can they spin the post-apocalyptic genre and still hold this zombie-fatigued viewers attention. But this Michael Michod film did, without the zombies. Actually reminded me of the time I was a fledgling film appreciation student under Clodualdo Doy del Mundo at DLSU when he assigned the class to watch and review Michelangelo Antonionis technically-acclaimed (for camerawork and also acting) 1975 film The Passenger which starred Jack Nicholson. It competed for the Palme dOr Award at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival but was also criticized as being slow-moving and pretentious. This time, The Rover was also in the Official Selection of the 2014 Festival de Cannes and brought with it engaging performances by Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, a moving musical score, great cinematography and a totally unexpected ending. Drew McWeeny of HitFix called the film glacially paced and intentionally minimalistic. Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino stated that the film is A mesmerizing, visionary achievement. The best post-apocalyptic movie since the original Mad Max. With the one-two punch of The Rover & Animal Kingdom, David Michôd proves himself to be the most uncompromising director of his generation. -
