Rashomon effect, noun The way in which different people will describe the same event or situation in different and contradictory ways. The incompatibilities between viewpoints do not necessarily arise out of dishonesty, and typically occur with each party believing they are offering the truth. The Rashomon effect can make uncovering the truth of a situation difficult, whether in journalism, in trials and hearings, in anthropology or in relationships. Thus, even without any foul play, the challenge of establishing an objective and accurate description is necessarily difficult because of the subjectivity of perception. The effect takes its name from the 1950 Japanese film Rashomon, in which different characters describe the same crime from different points of view but in incompatible ways. This story-telling device has been employed extensively in TV and film.
