Rasmea Odeh found guilty on one count of unjust procurement of naturalization. Despite her resilience, courage, and massive mobilization on her behalf- the jury came back with a guilty verdict. I havent seen it but this likely reflects narrowly drafted jury instructions that asked them to determine yes or no did Rasmea say she was not previously convicted on her naturalization form. That instruction would treat Rasmeas action with strict scrutiny which is wholly unjust in light of the circumstances of her arrest, torture, and the confusing nature of the form itself on its face. But the Judge almost predetermined this outcome by prohibiting evidence of torture by Israel at the trial and by refusing testimony about Israels martial system which deems all Palestinians guilty and is hardly ever proven otherwise. This is a a travesty of justice but one that is not atypical for a court of law - the not guilty verdict for Zimmerman still sears my body as if I heard it this morning. This is not over- Rasmea still needs our support. This is an attack on her work as a Palestinian activist and is meant to send a chilling message well beyond her immigration proceedings. Help out by donating to her defense fund and doubling and tripling our efforts for Palestinian freedom and liberation. So much love you to Rasmea- who makes us all hold our heads up higher, more resolute. uspcn.org
