Raspunsul RCI la articolul publicat in Sunday World (16 septembrie 2013) 16th September 2013 Re: Article dated 10th September 2013: “HSE clinic sparks anger as only non-nationals get complimentary service” sundayworld/top-stories/news/free-gp-service Letter to the editor Dear Madam/Sir, We, the Romanian Community of Ireland, a registered charity which “aims to develop and facilitate an interactive platform for Romanians to support their integration into Irish Society, to present a positive image of Romanians living in Ireland and to keep their connection to their culture and traditions alive” (RCI Mission Statement) would like to solicit our right of reply in relation to an article entitled “HSE clinic sparks anger as only non-nationals get complimentary service” published on Tuesday, 10th September 2013. Firstly, by using interchangeably the two terms “Roma” and “Romanian” the article in question clearly misinforms its readers. FYI, while the latter term refers to nationals of a country, namely Romania (i.e. it represents a symbol of national belonging), the former represents an ethnic group of people spread throughout Europe (which includes nationals of more countries). Hence your readers are left wondering which of the two you are referring to in your article. Secondly, by reporting on such facts in a superficial and biased manner, you are clearly failing your purpose of informing the population. In exchange, what you are accomplishing is to instigate people to more hate and suspicion against the ethnic/national “other”. Last but not least, we would like to bring to your attention that the label “non-national” is no longer accepted in the media language. This is precisely because the people you are reporting on DO have a nationality even though they are not Irish. In this circumstance, the term “foreign national” would definitely be the fair term to use. We strongly believe that media plays a huge role in shaping the public’s opinion and we believe that this time the article’s role was to misinform and instigate hate towards both groups of people (Romanians and Roma). We ask that this clarification be made as soon as possible.
