Now Henry has gone back to the same cohort to ask them how they and their organisations managed through the global financial crisis and find out what lessons they learned. It’s a good idea because stories about personal experience are always more palatable than dry platitudes or motherhood statements about best practice. The book underlines two important facts: while Australia was relatively buffered from the more severe impact of the GFC most organisations featured were affected by it in some way or another. The other feature is how many of the leaders found the crisis crystallised their understanding and practise of leadership. Many said they didn’t radically change but they did realise the need to be flexible and adaptive – chanted by management textbooks for years – was non-negotiable.
