Rather long!!! but very true and happy that someone else has put it all in writing - Cross posting - THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PURCHASING A DOG Things to consider before purchasing a dog Thank you to Lisa Camilleri for this information and advice Be a RESPONSIBLE BUYER; when it comes to dogs (or anything really) the breeding world is in your power - and you need to understand what that means before you spend your money on an animal. If you are willing to accept a bargain then breeders are going to be willing to cut corners to create a bargain. If you are willing to do away with extra paper work, like certificate, then breeders are going to not bother with certificates of the puppies nor even the parents. If you dont do your research and dont know what health problems your chosen breed is at risk of, then breeders are not going to bother investing in those health checks, regardless of the puppies well being If you are willing to buy a dog before it has been properly socialized, then breeders are going to sell underage puppies (regardless of legality) PUPS MUST BE 8 WEEKS AND OVER. If you are willing to ignore a lack of certain health checks because you cannot find a breeder locally who does them, then breeders will keep failing to carry out these checks, regardless of the well being of the puppies If you are willing to buy a puppy out of context, which you have not seen with the mother dog and where they have been living, ie in a pet shop, off Malta park etc, then breeders can easily keep breeding dogs in poor poor condition and sell pups for a greater profit. If you are willing to take short cuts, breeders will take short cuts also. Of course this hardly applies to all breeders. But your goal is to be a RESPONSIBLE BUYER If you are to refuse or not accept any of the above short cuts, then irresponsible breeders will either have to step up their game, or go out of business. The power is in YOUR hands. If you participate in a flawed system, the flawed system will continue. If you think the expense is not worth it (because NO responsibly bred dog is cheap - because doing things properly takes investment), or that going abroad for a responsibly bred dog is not worth it, then do not buy, ADOPT. Each and every cent that goes to short cut breeders is another cent they can invest in playing Russian roulette with the lives of puppies because to some counting coins is more important than healthy puppies.
