Rather than giving our children a singular emotion about adoption - TopicsExpress

Rather than giving our children a singular emotion about adoption (and if were honest, its usually the emotion of happiness or celebration), its imperative to offer and discuss with our children the various feelings that they may experience. In doing so, parents are giving kids permission, freedom, and reality, and are also letting their kids know that they can handle any of their kids big or small feelings or thoughts that may come their way. Letting a child know that he may one day feel happy, sad, mad, curious, embarrassed, and beyond about his adoption is truthful and lays the groundwork for what may come, and likewise, sharing with him that he may have more than one feeling at once and that his feelings may change many times relieves a child of some pressure. How much LESS scary would it be for a child to later experience one of these feelings (especially one perceived by the child or others as wrong--such as anger or sadness), but to know, Hey, mom told me that I might feel this way... so it must be okay... or This must be what Dad told me about, and I know he understands... hes got my back! #FlipTheScript #NationalAdoptionMonth #AdoptiveParentTools
